Trouble Shooting
1. Identify the problem: The first step in troubleshooting is to identify the problem. Ask the customer about the issue they're experiencing and gather as much information as possible to pinpoint the problem.2. Check the circuit breaker: If the customer is experiencing a total power outage, check the circuit breaker to see if it's tripped. Reset the breaker if necessary.3. Check the power source: If the customer is experiencing a partial power outage, check the power source to see if it's working correctly. Check the voltage and amperage to ensure its within the correct range. Check incoming power or main breaker to verify the correct voltage being supplied to the panel or circuits. 4. Check the wiring: Check the wiring for any visible damage, loose connections, or signs of wear and tear. Replace or repair any damaged wiring. 5. Check the electrical devices: Check the electrical devices connected to the circuit to see if they're functioning correctly. Replace or repair any faulty devices. Look for burned outlets or switches. Unplug every device or appliance connected to the circuit.6. Check the grounding and neutral continuity: Check the grounding to ensure it's working correctly. Poor grounding can cause electrical problems and even be dangerous. Use a continuity tester to verify continuity between the ground and neutral. A tripped GFCI will show a lost connection between the ground and neutral. Improperly terminated switches or outlets can cause failures in the circuit.7. Check the GFCI outlets: Check the GFCI outlets to see if they're working correctly. Test them using the test and reset buttons. Also use your multimeter to verify that power is passing through the device to the load side of the GFCI.8. Check the voltage at different locations: Check to see if the circuit is reading a reduced voltage at outlets. A reduced voltage can indicate a broken or lost neutral or hot causing backfeed. This can help to isolate the area of damage to the circuit. Splitting the connections, breaking the joints, at points along the circuit can also help locate the failed component or connection. 9. If you still haven’t resolved the issue take 5 or 10 minutes to clear your mind. Ask yourself what accessible areas or adjacent walls could be associated to the circuit. Follow the wiring in the attic or crawl space to locate outlets and junction boxes. 10. Document your findings: Document your findings and any repairs or replacements you make. This will help you keep track of your work and ensure you're billing the customer accurately.Remember, electrical troubleshooting requires a high level of expertise and caution.
